Christian testimony - Relying on God to Pass Driving Test

By Wushi

Today was the day when I went to take my driving test. My mother reminded me, “Don’t forget to pray to God.” Then, she specially read me a passage of God’s words: “If you rely on your knowledge and ability in your undertakings, then you shall always be a failure….” I replied casually: “Ok, I will.” But I thought to myself: Need I pray to God in such a small matter? With my skills, I should have no problem passing the test. I won’t bother God.

That morning it was very hot and sultry. In the field learners were taking their driving test orderly, while the place where I waited to take driving test was very noisy. Some learners around me were playing cards; some were chatting with each other; some were talking on the phone, and some were sharing their experiences. I was just waiting relaxedly and confidently, and only paid attention to what the loudspeaker announced to wait for my name to be called.

Eventually, my name was called over the loudspeaker, and it announced that I should hurry to the field. I quickly trotted over there. When I arrived, the examiner gestured to me to get on the car and said to me: “You may begin.” After I got in the car, I found that the car was different from the one that I usually used to practice in terms of performance, and the parking space position was different too. Thus, I couldn’t help but be a little nervous, but then I thought to myself, “All of these are not important because the method of backing the car into the parking space is the same. As long as I can give full play to my skills, it shouldn’t be a problem to pass the test.” Then I confidently put the car into reverse, and turned my head to see the parking space through the rear window. However, out of my expectation, I tried twice but failed to enter into the parking space both times. I was very upset and thought: My skills are so good. Why did I fail? But the fact was that there were only two chances for each learner to back the car into the parking space, and I had failed twice now. It seemed that I had no hope to pass the test and could only take it next time.

I came out of the field despondently. A learner quickly came forward and asked, “Have you passed the test?” I shook my head hopelessly. Then I went back to the place where everyone was waiting for the test and sat down, feeling really upset. At this time, I remembered that my mother had reminded me that if I didn’t pray to God, I would fail my test. But because I was too arrogant and believed too much in myself, I hadn’t taken God to my heart at all, and thought there was no need to pray to God or rely on God and that I could pass it by my own skills. Now it was too late to regret. I recalled a passage of the man’s fellowship: “Where do the achievements of scientists come from? They come from 1 percent of inspiration and 99 percent of perspiration, and it was 1 percent of inspiration that resolves all problems. Without inspiration, the 99 percent of perspiration is wasted effort and in vain.” From the fellowship I understood that if someone wants to achieve something, it doesn’t depend on how much of a price he pays but is decided by God. So, if I had no guidance or blessings of God when taking my driving test, no matter how hard I tried, all my effort was in vain. How could I forget these? At this time, I silently prayed to God in my heart: “Oh, God! I feel very depressed now. I regret that I didn’t pray to You and rely on You when I was taking my driving test. I only relied on myself and failed. I was wrong.” After praying, I thought of God’s words: “After God created mankind and gave them spirits, He enjoined them that if they didn’t call out to God, then they would not be able to connect with His Spirit and thus the ‘satellite television’ from heaven would not be received on earth. When God is no longer in people’s spirits there is an empty seat left open for other things…. Through mankind’s cries God gives them what they need, but He does not ‘reside’ within them at first. He just constantly gives them aid because of their cries….” From God’s words, I understood that God is willing to give us assistance whenever we need it. But the way to receive God’s help is to pray to God sincerely. I thought: Even though I didn’t pass the test this time, I have realized the importance of looking to God and relying on God in all things. I have gained such a harvest; thus this trip has not been made in vain. At this time, I felt enjoyment in my heart. I thanked God for allowing me to have such a special experience.

Just at this moment, God gave me an unexpected surprise. Before I could drink some water, I heard my name called over the loudspeaker again. I thought it was because I forgot to take my record card, so I hurried to get there. However, the staff said to me: “Why did you reverse the car only once?” I was very surprised and didn’t know what had happened. “Hurry up! Trot over there!” he said. After hearing what he said, I was extremely happy and thought: It is God that opens up the way for me and gives me another chance to take the test. Only after I ran there did I find that the examiner had been changed, and that the former examiner recorded I reversed the car only once, which meant that I could have one more chance. When I was sitting in the driver’s seat again, I prayed to God in my heart: “Oh, God! Thank You for giving me this chance. This time I am willing to look to You and rely on You sincerely. I am willing to entrust the test to You. Please lead me. No matter what the result will be, I am willing to obey You and praise You.” After I prayed, my heart calmed down. Then, I popped the clutch, put the car into reverse gear and then slowly let the clutch out. The car gradually started to move backward. I turned my head to see the parking space through the rear window, turned the steering wheel, and backed into the parking space. Although I was still a little nervous, my mentality was better than before. I had successfully backed the car into the parking space, so the next thing I should do was to pull out of the parking space and put the car in park. At this time, I thought to myself: I must be extremely careful. If anything goes awry, it will be a great pity. When I was pulling out of the parking space, the car was close to the front pole at about rear bumper level. If I turned the wheel too early, the car would hit it. So, I did not turn the wheel but let the car keep moving forth for one or two seconds. At this time, if I still did not turn the wheel, the car would cross the marking line. Therefore, I hurried to turn the steering wheel. Thank God! I succeeded! When the examiner came to check the result, he said to me: “Just now I was breathless with anxiety for fear that you would fail. Why did not you turn the wheel earlier? You had passed the former steps which were more difficult, but near the end, you almost crossed the marking line!” Hearing his words, I couldn’t help but offer my praise to God in my heart: “Oh, God! This time I could pass the test; it was not because I had good skills, but because of Your deeds.”

When I left the field and recalled the whole process of taking the test, I remembered a section of God’s words: “The heart and spirit of man are held in the hand of God, and all the life of man is beheld in the eyes of God. Regardless of whether or not you believe this, any and all things, living or dead, will shift, change, renew, and disappear according to God’s thoughts. This is how God rules over all things.” Yes! Everything, regardless of whether it has life or not, is ruled over by God’s hands and changes according to God’s thoughts. I truly experienced that God is alive and vivid. He was at my side, and orchestrated and arranged everything. When I encountered difficulties and prayed to Him with my heart, He opened up the way for me, allowing me to see His wonderful deeds. It is just as God’s word says: “The greatest wisdom is to look to God and rely on God in all things.” “Although looking to God may sound like a simple way to practice, this is a lesson that all those who follow God should study and enter their entire lives.” God’s words tell us that looking to God and relying on Him in all things is the most important lesson in our entire lives, and that it is also the essential practice in our lives. I am willing to put it into practice in accordance to God’s word in the future. Amen!
